This question relates perfectly to the objective of unit 3. The first thing one must do when trying to persuade someone of something is to get them to take a stance or have them affected by what it is that is being argued. The visual text can make me feel a certain way and therefore make me take a certain stance on the topic.
Whats the role of words that may acompany the visual text? How do they clarify or reinforce( or blur or contradict) the message? By providing a text explination of a visual text you can make your audience be forced into thinking or seein a certain idea that they might not have seen on their own. You can persuade their brains into thinking a certain way. I can clarify the message by reinforcing it.
