what impression does the overall visual text creat in you? In unit three we are forced to explore the means of taking position in an argument. This question relates perfectly to the objective of unit 3. The first thing one must do when trying to persuade someone of something is to get them to take a stance or have them affected by what it is that is being argued. The visual text can make me feel a certain way and therefore make me take a certain stance on the topic.
Whats the role of words that may acompany the visual text? How do they clarify or reinforce( or blur or contradict) the message? By providing a text explination of a visual text you can make your audience be forced into thinking or seein a certain idea that they might not have seen on their own. You can persuade their brains into thinking a certain way. I can clarify the message by reinforcing it.

freewrite: group work
when writing group work i had a bad experience in one of my business classes i felt as if i had no voice in the group. The one thing that i didnt enjoy about group work is the girl i was forced to do work with thought that they knew everything and i felt as if i had no voice in the room. Most of my ideas were ignored until the day of the presentation and when i fixed the presentation it never went through n class. this made me mad because some of the girls woul dtry to treat me as if i was a dumby it wasnt a good feeling everytime i would try to contribute my suggestions were not just dismissed but wernet even acknowledged. this waS very discouraginf to the point where i just decided i would let them do all the work since they thought they knew everything and i was definatly sorry i went about it like that. other than that i have not had too many bad experiences doing group work.
I am not sure what would make an ideal group enviornment maybe one wehre each person can contribute and be heard and all members feel equal and members who dont feel that they are better than others are present a good group enviornment is one where each member has a voice and they get a chance to try and to contribute.
EAch group member will have to play a part to make this an effective project i believe that the easiest way to have these roles is not to have a manager of the others but to delegate responsibilities to each person so that it may be divided in an organized fashion one person may be in charge of one article and i differnet person inc harge of another it all depends on all the parts that will be given out n this project.

My texts fit together because they all incorporate an argument on the hip hop community and its effects on society. Each argument provides different looks at the negative and positive aspects of hip hop. They all seem to come together to answer the main question of whether or not hip hop plays a negative role on our society. Each article can find elements of how the images portrayed in music are often seen taking place in real life. Which brings up the argument that exist inside the argument. Is hip hop being emulated or is it just a report of the real life events that occur everyday in our society. The arguments are filled with hip hop bashing and numerous senarios on how it brings down our society and it degrades women. One text speaks of how hip hop has become appaling to people even considered to be apart of its culture. One text tries to gain credibility in such a way by mentioning of the skin color of one of the hip hop critics. One of the texts gives rappers a chance to speak in their own defense which serves as one of the most valid arguments present because it allows the artist to have a voice and to not take all of the responsibility for themselves but to also spread some of it around the rest of society where society where it needs to be.The txts
The unstated asumptions that allow these arguments to co exist is the thought that all of the issues didnt exist prior to the graphic images presented in hip hop music. The assumption that artist speaking in such violent ways has raged the violence in our inner cities. The thoughts that rappers are not speaking on what goes on, but are fueling the violence and crime. Which all boils back down to the way society looks at things. Can people be blamed for the demise of a community. Is the violenced being fueled by rap music or being brought to the light. The assumption that this violence and crime has not been a problem untill rappers started rapping on such things is almost crazy. People cant speak on a problem that does not exist therefore society might have to turn the mirror around and see that while hip hop makes the problems more culturally acceptable it is not the origin of the problems it just dwells in them
These texts say that arguments in america are at times justifiable but are often presented in a finger pointing manner. Arguments in america look at passing blame as means of arguing. People in america dont like accepting responsibilites for problems, but once it becomes a mainstream epidemic then we like to find someone to blame for the situation. America contains some good arguments but many of the arguments that can be found are ones that are more interested in being one sided than makin valid arguments.

Unit 2 proposal
I am trying to decide what i shouold spend all my time on for my six week proposal. When making this argument i have drawn blanks. I have come up with an idea of two arguments but am unsure of whether or not they would be suffice.
At first i wanted to find something that was of great interest to me so i wanted to do something involving music. I thought about writing on all the succesful entrepeneurs who decided to overlook their oppurtunities for a higher education, but still managed to become very succesful business men in their fields. I could find articles about examples of people's succcess stories and see what they have in common. I would be able to find these stories in many different places. My only thing is that i am unsure how to incorporate this into an argument i am really struggling need help with this...
My next idea was the argument surrounding the BCS and college football. The BCS has seemed to have its critics ever since its origin. Some team seems to always be left out and given unfair results from the complex system. My argument would be whether or not there should be a playoff game in college football. I would be able to find many different arguments from all over the place. I could find the BCS supporters, but would most likely find more information on the critics.
Im not sure which one of the arguments would serve the best for my analysis. Please help me as i am struggling finding a topic for this assignment because i am still unsure what i should put or use for my paper...

free write in class
Today i walked in class late now that we have gotten to our free wright i am unsure what to writeabout. I heard our teacher discussing something about picking an argument so maybe this blog is supposed to be about our argument. My argument hmmm im unsure what it will be i was thinking of doing somethin sports related like why salaries deserve to be high or something of that nature but that may be to tupical of an athlete so than i start exploring another passion of mine the world of music. Maybe i can incorporateone of my favorite artists maybe i should argue that success is determined not by your abilities, but by the oppurtunities you are able to receive. I dont knw i am still unsure where i would go with this but i start thinking of neighborhood success storys lik jigga and fifty cent and even cashmoney who come from the same neighborhood as me. i dont know what to argue maybe sports would be a whole lot simpler. But back to success i might be trying to say that more people would be more societly contributing citizens had their enviornments been different yea that sounds good. I might be trying to speak on all the wonderful minds that have fell victim to our streets and our prison system. Is that a good argument cuase i think i could develop a lot of information, but i am unsure if that is what she is looking for. Hope i figure this out by thurs.

Pathos, Ethos, & Logos in the bary...
After doing my observation in the library i have come to the conclusion. That there are many different appeals within different parts of the library. Pathos runs present with the different moods or attitudes you get when you enter different sections. In the computer section people feel as if it is a more laid back type of study enviornment. I witnessed people talking, laughing, and very few people steadily working without becoming distracted. The main part of the library also gives a feeling of a more laid back study enviornment. Due to the tables i did witness more work being done, but people still tend to use group work as extra time to socialize. Groups in this section were witnessed to be the loudest. In the quieter sections the environment made people feel as if it was just a place to get there work done and go about there business. Less side conversations or distractions were noticed. More people seemed to be focused on getting their assignments out the way.
I found ethos to be prevalent also in the library. For people who acted in ways that were out of context for the setting that they were in they often were met with feelings of discontent. Any person who was loud in the basement was looked at is if they were guilty of committing a horrible crime. It was to the point where the person had no choice but to feel uncomfortable if they were making to much noise in the quiet section. It was as if each environment had their own set of social norms and those who didn't conform were met with horrible looks.
Logos was present also in the fact that people knew how to act in each different area. A student i witnessed being loud and goofy in the main part of the library seemed to be a completely different person when i seen them in the quiet section. They were steadily working with no distractions when just a minute ago it seemed as if they were unable to get any work done.

In class: analyzing visuals
The first thing i notice that this girl is holding a joe. This draws my attention because she looks like she is very young. I also look at the way she is posing and her demeanor. She looks like she has been having a real bad day and that her nerves are really bad . She has her arms crossed and holding her cigarette out as if she just needs this one smoke to calm her nerves. This attracts my attention because it is very realistic looking. Her whole demeanor seems that of one of a person who really needs to smoke a cig might act.
The image is in contrast with her because everything around her is seeming to be in a real dark lighting as if it is a dark mood around her. The darkness all around her i think symbolizes her mood or the life she has that makes her so stressed out. I then noticed an all white dress on her. The lighter color might be meant to say that she is really good on the inside and that she has had incidents happen to her that has her to have moments of coldness. The lighting hiding in the upper corners of the darkness might be there to symbolize the fact that once all the troubles go away she will actually shine through like a star. All she needs is just to have her smoke from the cigarette and everything will be alright.
This image is about the fact that some children are forced to grow up so fast and how people on the outside cant understand because they have not been in those shoes. The girl is surrounded by darkness which could be how her life is. When you are in a room full of darkness and there is nothing to see you have no choice but to be your own light. That is why i feel like she is in lighter colors. She is one of the only positive things she has in her life and if she can make it through the storm she will see sunshine.
The person creating this image probably meant for the girl to stand out the most in the picture. Being that it is titled candy cigarette i think the creator might of meant for us to think of the influences toys can have on children. When a child is emulating smoking they can become a smoker.

it was hard for me to unddrstand the basic meaning behind Logos. I'm not sure if it meant that something should just be logical or does an argument have to point out a notalbe logos element. i understood the logic behind it. Some things presented in arguments should give us an understanding just because it is the most logical reason. Like the saying you are facing nothing that no one faced before you. I feel statements like this give a logical meaning behind them because in this situation we can assume that we can make it through any problem because there has already been somebody that has done so. I was kinda confused on the argument of precedent part. I couldnt see if they were saying that we should assume something from precedent or what it was kinda hard for me to catch the meaning behind what they was trying to say. Other than thos points i think Logos will be fairly easier to deal with than Ethos. Because it is more of a logical thing.

My Space is Our Space
SO when trying to find a place to analyze i was struggling. Couldn't think of anything when i realized i had been sitting in the library for nearly an hour and still hadn't gotten any work done.
And then it hit me! Ill analyze the library. The library the seems to be the perfect place to come and get no work done. I find it almost impossible to study when you are in a room packed full of your peers. So i will be trying to see how much work people are actually able to get done while being in this very social environment. This space obviously appeals to us students because they have all the resources. Computers, printers, and desks all the tools you need to get whatever schoolwork done that you have. I will be trying to see why one of the most distracting places on campus seems to be so appealing to study at. I always come in the library with good intentions and seem to not get much done. Hopefully my observations show me whether it is just me or if it is the environment.

In Class: Ethical appeals
For my ethical appeal i brought in ForceFields. ForceFields keep your shoes fresh so you do not get wrinkles in them and keep them looking new. I feel that this is an element of ehtos because it shows that i like to look neat. They say cleansliness is next to godliness. I feel that if you look good you will feel good. The shoe protectors show that i actually do try to keep what i have looking fresh. I think it also speaks on the side of me that i appreciate what i have and want to take care of the things that i am blessed to have, while i strive to get the things i can't quite have. I am an appreciative person. I always try to remain thankful for what i have. It is also representative to my style. I like for all my shoes to look fresh. I feel the outfit doesn;t matter if you dont have a nice air of shoes on. The shoe protectors also give the argument that i like to do things in my shoes and dont want to have to worry about them getting messed up.

In class: Ideas
I'm unsure of the free place that i will be analyzing but a few places do come to mind. One place would be the new main. Upstairs in the Caf there are many places to chose from eating. It is presented as if there is a huge selection of different types of meals to chose from. Showing displays of five different types of cuisine. The seating is no longer in different sections like how it used to be in the old main. setting now looks like if it is established for the sole purpose of eating. In the old main there used to be allot of people just hanging out. You didn't have to eat in order to be in there. Now i think the argument is being made that they only want it to be a place for eating and do not want any hanging out. The people who work their walk around with chef uniforms to sort of give you a feeling of classiness in the main.

Change is Now
At the 44th president Barack Obama's inaugeration there were many arguments present. One major argument that was being pointed out by almost everyone present was the fact that this was one of the most historical days in our country. The argument presented i feel was the fact that we have taken one step closer to bridging the gap between all races in America. We as a country have become that much closer to finally becoming a completely unified america. This argument was also made strong by the way the networks focused on the crowd watching. It was by far the biggest crowd that has ever been present to watch a presidential inaugeration. This by itself showed what the importance of this event was to the american people. The crowds were not just filled with black people, but it was a mix of all groups of people gathered as one to be a part of this great day in America. This is an argument of our present. We have gone from being a country that has enslaved people to being one that has had a president of african descent.
Obama states that we have to go back to the God given promise. "All our equal, All our free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness." I feel that Obama is arguing that we as a country have strayed away from the goals that our forefathers had in store for us when starting this nation. He is arguing that we can no longer just do for a certain group of people but now more than ever we must come together as americans and take care of all people . He follows by calling us to start our work at rebuilding a new America and states that with action we can change. This argument has an emotional appeal. Every American is experiencing the harsh effects of our recession. Due to the crisis many Americans have experienced suffering. Obama makes every american feel as if they can help in the recovery as he lets us know that we all have a part in bringing america out of this crisis. This is an argument for us to make decisions that will help get us out of this mess.
The next argument i noticed was one that had logical appeals. When speaking upon our involvement and relationship with other nations. Obama reached out to all these nations. He states that it is time for us not to flex our military muscle, but to use it only when necessary. The argument present in this case is the fact that we might have become so comfortable being powerful that we just tend to march over anyone who oposes anything that America is for. He is telling us that this is not right and that we must only use our military power as a last resort when no other peaceful means seem to be present. This seems to be an argument to mediate, letting us know that we can no longer go around just stepping on any country that has different believes than our country.
"To the muslim world we seek a new way forward. Based on mutual interest and mutual respect.... Your people will judge you on what you can build, not on what you destroy." This was arguably one of the most important parts of the speech for me. This is a proposal argument dealing with middle eastern and Islamic nations. He is arguing that the ways of force obviously werent working and that it was not the right way to go about resolving a conflict. We were forcing things upon those people and were not respecting there way of life. By him saying this i felt as if he was trying to start over and heal our damaged relationship with the muslim world. Offering them a chance to be heard and to move forward from our past differences. This was a big step in the right direction to me.
The last argument was of where we will be in the future. Obama stated that he was the son of an immigrant who sixty years ago wouldnt be served in certain restaurants, but he today is able to take the oath of presidency. I think the argument present is that in just sixty years black people went from being unable to go in certain places to having a person in the highest position in America. So in sixty more years the possibilities are endless. I believe this argues that in sixty more years we can eliminate the pains of racism and all be one people.
This inaugaration was the most historic things i have ever witnessed and i was amazed and motiviated to see something i thought i would never witness in my near future.

In class: An Argument?
Argument, When i first came inot this class an argument to me was like a fight or a disagreement. When you hear the word argument you usually think of people getting into it or falling out amongst each other. Argument to me was always looked upon with a negative view. After reading chapter 1 i started finally to understand that everything truly is an argument. The way a person dresses or acts is an argument about there persona as a whole. I started to think of things as awhole like even things small as when every one stands for the national anthem we are all making an argument. No one speaks or dares to sit down we all show respect to the song and country the argument could be that we all our proud americans. The book really just made me look at everything as a different perspective because everything tends to say something more than what it appears to be. I now try to look and see what things are arguing and what argument they could be trying to present.

My argument that i decided to bring in is an article on how bcs system works. This argument has been going on between fans for as long as the bcs has come into play. Strangely this is an argument that is very close to my heart becasue of the implications it often has on many college football teams seasons. The system shore enough seems to always leave someone upset. Every year we hear of a team that has equal credentials of the teams in the bcs games, but they seem to get left out. Every fan's worse nightmare is the bcs, but what else is there to do. This has to be the argument i brougth in because it is an unsettled argument. No one likes the system, but no one seems to knw a better solution. Just this year texas seemed to get cheated out of a chance to compete in the big 12 championship due to a three way one loss tie. So if things may have played out more farely texas might be the national champions. Bcs is an unfair system. People want playoffs but no one can determine a way to make a good playoff system that still will benefit the schools and its players in an equal way. What can possibly be the solution besides a playoff system college seasons might have to be cut shorter tho in order not to exceed into the pro schedule or superbowl that might not be good. There needs to be action taking place what about the teams in non bcs conferences who are better than the teams who are gauranteed bcs spots. come on the acc there not that good while many non bcs teams have way better sqads

Letter of Introduction
My name is Brenan Gordon I am a junior and a business major. I was born and raised in New Orleans, Lousiana. Even though my main reason for taking this class is because its required i still hope to come away from the class with the skills to make and take place in effective arguments. Through this course i want to gain the ability to clearly show and deliver my side of anargument. My primary means of writing consists of writing texts and emails msotly. I use writiting more as a direct form of communication. I also like to use writing to express my feelings in writing poetry when i have a lot on my chest. I feel as if writing is a major and necessary part of my life. Writing serves as one of my major means of communication. Besides leisure communication i tend to not like writing. In the means of academics writing is always looked at as a hassle to me. Wrtiing papers and thiings like that is not something i like to do. I think the reason i look at writing negatively is becasue its often a forced activity.
I have read, understand, and agree to all the terms of the class syllabus.
