Unit 2 proposal

I am trying to decide what i shouold spend all my time on for my six week proposal. When making this argument i have drawn blanks. I have come up with an idea of two arguments but am unsure of whether or not they would be suffice.
At first i wanted to find something that was of great interest to me so i wanted to do something involving music. I thought about writing on all the succesful entrepeneurs who decided to overlook their oppurtunities for a higher education, but still managed to become very succesful business men in their fields. I could find articles about examples of people's succcess stories and see what they have in common. I would be able to find these stories in many different places. My only thing is that i am unsure how to incorporate this into an argument i am really struggling need help with this...
My next idea was the argument surrounding the BCS and college football. The BCS has seemed to have its critics ever since its origin. Some team seems to always be left out and given unfair results from the complex system. My argument would be whether or not there should be a playoff game in college football. I would be able to find many different arguments from all over the place. I could find the BCS supporters, but would most likely find more information on the critics.
Im not sure which one of the arguments would serve the best for my analysis. Please help me as i am struggling finding a topic for this assignment because i am still unsure what i should put or use for my paper...

  1. Brennan,
It sounds like you have some good ideas, you are just unsure of what to choose because of the long commitment you'll have to make with the topic. I think you are on the right track in finding something in common with your pre-topics like music and success stories. Maybe something like Ray Charles and how he overcame problems and still became very successful? Good work and good luck!

  2. Brennan,

Those are two really great choices. Just remember you are spending six weeks on this and have to come up with three page analysis on whatever articles you find. I think music could definitely work! There is so much argument against people who have made it to the big time even after all the strife they had to overcome. Billie Holiday is just one I can think of. Anyways, definitely decide on whatever you have more passion for! Keep up the good work.

  3. Those are both good topics, but I would personally go with the music topic, I think you could relate it really well to the culture of larger assertions. It would probably require more research and sounds like it would be more challenging, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. It is a long term research so you might enjoy that more, I think it would be more interesting also. But good work so far, I think you will do well with both!

  4. Brennan,
It seems like you've located 2 good, broad topics. It's great that you like them both, and your classmates have given you some excellent advice in choosing one. But I'd like to offer a word of caution/advice: remember that this assignment is not asking you to make an argument about the TOPIC but rather it asks that you analyze and make an argument about the general state of arguments in the US. For example, if you were to choose the BCS topic-- you wouldn't be debating the pros/cons of the system. Instead, you'd be analyzing other primary arguments about the system and then use that analysis to make a comment about how well we make arguments in the US. I hope this helps, and if you have more questions you should, as always, make an appointment with me.
